What is a Nexus Sunday service like?
We're an informal bunch at Nexus. Our services are casual, so wear what you like, there is no dress code. Once you enter the St. Andrew's building, you can either head down to Iona Hall, or, for those with children, head up the stairs to check your kids into their programming for the morning. In Iona Hall on Sunday mornings, you can expect friendly faces and tea, coffee, or even hot chocolate served by our coffee team. Feel free to mingle and then take a seat in one of our 'vintage' burgundy church chairs. Our service starts at 10am, rarely exceeds an hour, and is filled with what we hope is good, and thought-provoking music. This is your chance to simply be present. You won't be asked to sing or stand (even our band is seated) and the songs we perform are less "churchy" - more like songs you might hear on a playlist that covers intriguing and diverse music from the 70's until today.
We often share news of events and happenings in our community as part of our services and each week one of our pastors shares a sermon or reflection. At Nexus, the goal of the sermon is to start or continue a conversation, not to end it or try to give final answers. We hope our sermons are thoughtful and engaging, so we try to make them more narrative-focused than lecture-style. We are a community that enjoys humour, so it is not uncommon for us to be laughing together throughout the morning. At times, you will also experience different 'segments' in the service (like Question & Response, or Reverse Q & R, or community discussions and reflections), and we usually close with a reflective song followed by a prayer or blessing.
Once a month, we observe Eucharist together at an 'open table' where anyone can receive bread and wine (or grape juice), followed by "Soup Sunday", where some of us bring crock pots full of delicious soup. The whole community is invited to stay and mingle over a light meal together.
For more information on our driving ethos at Nexus (our passion), what binds us together at Nexus (our path), and how we try to practice doing community together (our practices) please see our "About" page. If you have children, visit our "Kids and Youth" page to learn more.
We'd be glad to connect with you!
